Spiders and Their Sturdy Webs
튼튼한 거미줄로 집을 짓는 거미

Some people get a scare when they see a spider. But we should actually feel grateful to them, since they catch and eat pests.

Spiders weave webs between branches using thin silk threads. They first attach threads that look just like wheel spokes and then spiral around them. This forms the spider webs that all of us are familiar with.

Spider silk is made in silk glands in the spider's abdomen. The silk is comprised of proteins. It is in liquid form inside the spider's body, but it solidifies once it's outside the body.
Spider silk is very thin, and feels like it could easily break at any moment.

However, it is over five times stronger than steel of the same thickness, and is also elastic.

거미를 보면 무서워하는 사람들도 있지만, 거미는 해충을 잡아먹는 실로 고마운 존재이다.

거미는 가느다란 거미줄을 내뿜어 나뭇가지 사이에 거미집을 짓는다. 먼저 수레바퀴의 살처럼 생긴 줄을 친 다음, 빙글빙글 도는 나선 모양의 줄을 친다. 이것이 우리가 흔히 아는 거미줄 형 태이다.

거미줄은 거미 배 속의 실에서 만들어진다고 한다. 거미줄은 단백질로 되어 있는데, 거미의 몸속에서는 액체이지만 몸 밖으로 나오면 고체로 바뀐다.

거미줄은 금방이라도 끊어질 것처럼 매우 가늘다. 하지만 같은 굵기의 강철보다 다섯 배 이상 튼튼하고, 탄력도 있다고 한다.
