One day, I received word through Instagram that the older sister of an old friend of mine in Japan was visiting Korea. After we agreed on a date to meet up, I searched for restaurants to visit together and places she might want to visit.

Since we couldn't speak each other's language, we communicated in English. I found myself practicing writing as I used ChatGPT to doublecheck whether the sentences I was sing in our conversations made sense.

We went to a Korean barbecue place that's so popular that people have to line up to get in. We timed our arrival to get in right when they opened.
My friend's sister is such a huge fan of Korean cuisine that she makes her own kimchi in Japan. She took time to savor each of the generous side
dishes and was curious about how they were prepared.

I was amazed to find that English sentences and words I had recited aloud before popped up naturally as I spoke with her. I really gained a lot that day, and I won't soon forget it.

어느 날 인스타그램으로 내 오랜 일본 친구의 언니가 한국에 방문한다는 소식을 듣게 되었다.

서로의 언어를 못하는 터라 우리는 영어로 연락을 주고받았다. 나는 내가 대화 중에 사용한 문 장이 옳은 표현인지 ChatGPT를 써서 다시 확인했는데, 저절로 글쓰기 연습이 되었다.

우리는 인기가 많아서 줄 서서 들어가야 하는 한국식 고깃집을 갔다. 오픈 시간에 맞춰 도착하 여 바로 들어갔다. 내 친구의 언니는 일본에서 한국 김치를 직접 담가 먹을 정도로 한식 마니아 였다. 푸짐한 반찬 하나하나를 음미하며 먹었고 어떻게 만드는 것인지도 궁금해했다.

그녀와 소통하면서 전에 낭독했던 영어 문장이나 단어들이 무심결에 튀어나와서 신기하기도 했다. 내가 얻은 것이 참 많은 잊지 못할 하루였다.
