나의 반려 마리모

One day, my daughter brought home a marimo moss ball from school.
I'm not especially good at keeping plants alive in pots, so my response was lukewarm at first. However, we've been living with our marimo for three years now.

Marimo are freshwater algae that form a round shape and are found in lakes. Changing the water just once or twice a month is enough to keep it healthy. There's a superstition that says a floating marimo brings good luck. One day, I saw the marimo floating around, and I was so taken with it that I made a big fuss all by myself.

But for the past few days, the marimo ball has been floating up and sinking back down repeatedly. I'm starting to get worried that something is wrong. However, l've decided to take it easy and observe it a bit longer. After all, it might actually bring us good luck.

어느 날 딸이 학교에서 마리모를 가지고 왔다. 나는 화분 같은 것을 기르면 자주 죽이는 편이어 서, 처음에는 시큰둥했었다. 그러나 그 이후로 우리는 3년째 마리모와 함께 지내고 있다.

마리모는 호수에 사는 동글동글한 모양의 담수성 녹조류이다. 물을 한 달에 한두 번만 갈아 주 면 건강하게 잘 산다. 마리모가 물에 뜨면 행운이 온다는 속설이 있다. 하루는 마리모가 둥둥 떠 있는 것을 보고 어찌나 신기하던지 혼자서 호들갑을 떨어 댔다.

그런데 지난 며칠 동안은 마리모가 계속 둥둥 떴다 가라앉았다를 반복하고 있다. 뭔가 이상이 있는 것은 아닌지 슬슬 걱정이 되기 시작한다. 하지만 편안한 마음으로 좀 더 지켜보기로 했다.
