Kimjang is a cultural practice among Koreans where we prepare and share kimchi in large amounts, to make it through the long, cold winter.

Once a year, I do volunteer work with a charitable organization to share kimchi with neighbors who are in need. While it involves the act of making food, I like that the process allows volunteers to engage in meaningful conversations and share time together.

After the kimjang process is complete, the kimchi is shared with the local community, distributed among those who may feel marginalized. Though kimjang is a demanding task that requires time and effort, thinking about the neighbors who will enjoy the kimchi makes it all worthwhile.

What's more, it carries on the fading tradition of kimjang and emphasizes the importance of a sense of community.

김장이란 한국 사람들이 춥고 긴 겨울을 나기 위해 많은 양의 김치를 담그고 나누는 문화입니다.

저는 일 년에 한 번 자선 단체 사람들과 함께 소외된 이웃에게 김치를 나눠 주기 위한 김장 봉사를 합 니다. 먹을 것을 만드는 봉사 활동이지만, 그 과정에서 봉사자들이 서로 의미 있는 소통을 하며 함께 시간을 보낼 수 있어서 좋습니다.

김장이 다 되면, 그 김치는 지역 사회에 공유되어 소외된 이웃들에게 분배됩니다. 김장은 시간과 노력 이 필요한 힘든 일이긴 하지만, 김치를 맛있게 드실 이웃을 생각하면 보람이 느껴집니다.

게다가 점점 사라져 가는 김장 문화도 이어 가고, 공동체 의식의 중요성도 느낄 수 있습니다.
