Our second child was running a fever a few days ago, and her temperature spiked to over 40 degrees. We took her to the local pediatrician to get a shot and bring her fever down, but the fever didn't easily subside. Leaving her in my wife's care, I dragged myself to work.

I called home from work asking about our child's condition, when my wife said in an urgent tone that she was going into convulsions and abruptly hung up. Our child quickly recovered, but my wife must have gotten a nasty shock. The problem turned out to be febrile convulsions caused by the high fever. Children experiencing prolonged high fever above 40 degrees may develop this condition in some cases.

Seeing their child in this condition can easily make parents fall into a panic.

며칠 전 둘째 아이가 갑자기 열이 나면서 체온이 40도까지 치솟았다. 동네 소아과에 데리고 가서 해열 제 주사를 맞췄지만, 열은 쉽게 떨어지지 않았다. 아이를 아내에게 맡기고 나는 무거운 발걸음으로 출 근했다.

회사에서 아이의 상태를 묻는 통화 중에 아내는 다급한 목소리로 아이가 경련을 하기 시작했다며 갑자 기 전화를 끊었다. 아이는 곧 회복되었지만 아내가 많이 놀란 듯했다. 알고 보니 고열로 인한 열경련이 문제였다. 아이들은 40도가 넘는 고열이 지속되는 경우 간혹 이런 증상이 나타나기도 한다.

이런 상태에 있는 아이를 보는 부모는 패닉에 빠지기 쉽다. 이런 경우 경련 중에 아이를 옮기려다가 다 칠 수도 있다. 그래서 아이가 안정될 때까지 기다린 후, 인근 병원에 가서 진료를 받는 것이 안전하다 고 한다.
