It was recently decied that electricity and gas bills would each be increased by about 5%. Despite a steady rise in global energy prices, these increases were not appropriately reflected in utility fees. This led to increased operating losses for related compies, providing the backdrop for the higher fees.

However, the rate hike has been postponed by a year for basic livehood recipients and people in lower income groups. This is meant to alleviate the burden on these vulnerable groups. A staggered payment system will also be offered for small business owners.

Countries like ours, lacking in natural resources, are inevitably hit hard by a rise in international energy prices. Plus, the production and supply of elecricty or gas generate a huge amount of carbon emmissions. Our efforts to conserve energy are a necessity, not a choice.

최근에 전기와 가스 요금이 약 5퍼센트씩 인상되는 것으로 결정되었다. 그동안 국제 에너지 가격은 지속적으로 상승하였으나, 이러한 상승분이 공공요금에 적절히 반영되지 못했었다. 이에 따라 관련기업들의 영업 손실이 커진 것이 요금 인상의 배경이 되었다.

하지만, 기초 생활 수급자와 차상위 계층에 대해서는 요금 인상을 1년간 유예하기로 했다. 이는 취약 계층의 부담을 경감하기 위한 조치이다. 소상공인에 대해서는 분할 납부 제도도 시행한다고 한다.

우리나라와 같이 천연 자원이 부족한 국가는 국제 에너지 가격 상승의 영향을 크게 받을 수밖에 없다. 또한 전기나 가스의 생산과 공급을 위해서는 엄청난 양의 탄소가 발생한다. 우리의 에너지 절약 노력은 선택이 아닌 필수라는 생각이 든다.
